The SX3 project gave us a lot of chances to come up with new innovative ideas for an urban commuter. We began with the SX2 bike concept in 2017; the SX3 is essentially an extension of that original concept. I concepted and invented several features for this model, including the integrated wheel lock (kicklock), the LED matrix display, the alarm system, the internal connector components, the lights, the complete brake system, as well as the fully integrated handlebar assembly.
This bike was designed from the ground up with packaging, shipping and maintenance in mind, without diminishing the functions and aesthetics.
My role and responsibilities for this project included sketching, concepting, 3D modeling, prototyping, serving as the main contact point with our e-bike supplier, creating animations for the display, generating project files, designing flowcharts for the functions and features, and developing our brand identity.
Our goal was to design components and features that would be unobstrusive to the frame's design. I created an integrated wheel lock that could be used as a secondary or primary lock, depending on the user’s needs. The lock was designed to work in conjunction with our alarm and location tracking to create a full theft deterrent system. When you locked it, the system would deactivate and arm itself automatically without requiring much thought from users. For the display, we wanted something that would not be visible when the bike is turned off, but magically comes on as you start riding. We wanted people to perceive this as how bikes should be — a fun way to get around town.
