S4 & X4

VanMoof

In 2022, a decision was made to create a cost down version of the SX3 models, with the goal of positioning the newly released SA5 as our higher end model. We took a fresh look at the SX3 to see what could be done without sacrificing too much of its brand identity and features.

We made some improvements to the S4 frame but minor changes to the X4. We were also able to drop the top tube height slightly by adopting a new rim/tire size, which also helped to accentuate the bike's silhouette. The rest of the time was spent on CMF by my team to help get a fresh take on the improved frames.

Role & responsibility

My role and responsibilities for this project included creating and maintaining ID project briefs, establishing new CMF standards for production/SC/ME departments, leading the ID team in Taipei, and engaging in discussions with marketing regarding storytelling. Our target audience played a major role in the development of this model; we aimed to make it reflective of a new generation of riders.

Work

Process

Work was also invested in revamping all of the packaging. We managed to reduce costs by as much as 40% simply by implementing design changes to the outer box, accessory packaging, and assembly steps. We encountered several challenges to get the desired paint quality. We worked closely with our suppliers and production team to address these issues, so that we could keep our ID goals aligned.
