The V bike was an exciting project. The initial public concept was created in just a few weeks and launched in 2021. In 2022, my team and I were given the opportunity to revitalise this concept in under six months, a challenge we embraced with enthusiasm.
To meet the tight deadline, we suggested refining some of the original features while ensuring the core concept remained intact. The next image below illustrates what we began with. As we reviewed the design, we noticed that several details didn’t align with Vanmoof's updated brand identity, which we had been in the process of refining. We took this as an opportunity to innovate and rework the concept, aligning it with the brand’s vision for the future.
My role and responsibilities for this project included leading the ID team in Taipei, prototyping, bridging departments in Amsterdam with Taipei, communicating concepts to the management team, assisting the design team in aligning with our brand identity and vision, and aiding them in conveying ideas to the engineering teams.
Since we weren't involved with the original concept, we dedicated significant time to refining key features to ensure they aligned with our goals. We worked on enhancing the design to better reflect our brand identity, with softer curves and a more balanced CMF. Additionally, we focused on making the design both practical for riding, with functional features and feasible for manufacturing.
While we didn’t fully realise our ideal silhouette, we successfully brought the project to a production-ready state and met the tooling kickoff deadline. Unfortunately, the project was cancelled due to budget cuts. We had hoped to revisit it in the future to re-assess the brief, and further enhance the design, but perhaps another time.
